Never in all my analytical glory did I anticipate or properly prepare Times readers for the grim Vietnam slaughter ahead. Like Kennedy and his equally ignorant counselors, I had come to think of Cold War battles as symbolic “games,” fought with proxies and with diplomatic feints and parries inspired by Harvard’s “game theorists.” In the heady air of our imperial capital, I came dangerously close to forgetting that its officials and journalists were waging the game with real lives, and deaths.
